Barrie Wentzell

"Nobody can predict when history will be made, so the slight pressure of a finger on a button can freeze a moment, the import of which can only be measured by the passing of time. For a photographer, the trick is to be there to capture it.

Barrie Wentzell is one of a small group of photographers who were there at the time when musicians in the seventies were making history before anyone knew it would become history. It takes a keen sense of being in the right place at the right time, and is not merely down to luck.

The candid photograph he took, of Ian Gillan, Jon Lord and I during a studio session in 1970 is a perfect example; taken when we were unaware of either his presence or even of how poignant it would prove to be decades later. It was a pivotal moment for Deep Purple."
